The excellent Maxtek Vintage Style DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) + FM mains/battery powered radio represents incredible value combined with exceptional quality.
Regrettably the member(s) of staff at Aldi responsible for supplying the online description omitted to mention the type of cells which power this item, namely 4 x ‘D' Size (R20) XL 1.5v batteries, although fortunately a 3-pin U.K. mains power adaptor is supplied in the box.
They also neglected to state that there is a 3.5mm stereo headphone output socket located at the back of the radio, adjacent to the mains adaptor socket. Ideally the headphone socket should really have been positioned on either the top fascia or on one of the side panels, but at least there is one !!!
A removable 93mm x 40mm plastic panel at the base of the radio enables four ‘D' size batteries to be inserted. In addition, 4 silicon non-slip circular 'feet' have been placed one at each corner and attached to the bottom of the radio, providing extra stability whilst preventing inadvertent damage to vulnerable surfaces.
The sturdy carrying handle appears to be made of strong metal and all of the rotating dials and buttons on the top panel have a reassuringly solid feel. An extending telescopic aerial is situated towards the top of the rear panel and the orange backlit LCD splay on the top of the radio is particularly clear. In the DAB mode, it provides various rolling alpha-numeric data, such as the identity of each radio station, the name of the presenter and details of the music track being played etc.
The pleasing sound quality provided via the stereo loudspeakers is sufficiently loud for use in a typical kitchen or bedroom location and there are no less than 10 buttons for DAB and a further 10 for FM broadcasts, making a total of 20 pre-set stations. The left-hand knob controls the volume and the right-hand one the tuning dial. When turning the tuning dial, once the display reaches the next radio station, simply press down on the dial which then locks that station. We live about 10 miles south-east of central London and the quality of reception is astonishing on both DAB and FM.
The concise well-written 14-page User Guide booklet is printed in clear understandable English, which I regard as a welcome move. Publications like this have become something of an endangered species lately with the widespread availability of the internet, but many older people still have no experience whatsoever of computers or using software.
Incidentally, for your peace of mind this radio comes with a decent 3-year warranty and currently I know of NOTHING else on the market which comes REMOTELY close to offering such a fine product at such a ridiculously inexpensive price. Buy one NOW before they all disappear off the shelves !!!!

Just Right
I bought one of these as one of my friends got one on Thursday. It performs well and the DAB signal is great!. It's clearer than my old radio. I am very with this purchase.
The mains adaptor was a little awkward to find. Its hidden in a recess in the big piece of polystyrene on the outside side edge rather then where you would expect it. I think a sticker would help.

Awesome Radio
I've bough on of these as a present when they were available last year. I now have bought one for myself as they ran out so quickly. This is a great piece of kit and the sound is awesome for such a little radio.
